Street tree surveying
We are surveying all the newly planted street trees in Birmingham to check that they are thriving and being looked after properly. The data we collect can help us support trees into maturity, as they increase Birmingham’s canopy cover and biodiversity levels whilst also mitigating against harmful air pollution and contributing to urban cooling.
To date we’ve surveyed over 3,000 of Birmingham’s street trees and have some data on over 75,000. These can be viewed on the Birmingham Tree Map. We’ve been supported in this work through funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Surveyors assess the crown dieback, overall condition, and potential damage of street trees. This determines the aftercare needed for a specific tree and also informs decision making around species selection and location mapping for future tree planting.
